It had to happen. I've been dying my hair since I was 12, and now 16 years later it was like toasted straw. I wasn't scared to cut my hair though because this isn't the first time.
I'm the type of person who doesn't wait for an appointment, when I see a do that I want, I run to CVS for the cheapest dye, sharpen my best scissors and get to chopping. Now I have to sit back and wait to see what my natural hair color is. So far I thinking of calling the color 'sun-bleached rat'.
It seems that this impulsive cutting and growing out has made me always in the awkward position of being two steps off from the hottest trends at the time.
I had a bowl cut from ages 0-6. My mom says it was because I hated having my hair brushed. It was cool because I thought I looked just like Chynna Phillips.
Around first or second grade however, the concept of a perm at the top of my list of life goals. I blame it on repeated viewing of Annie.
This classic kooky little gal not only had a short perm ( something I just had to grow my bowl cut a few inches to achieve) she also had a rat tail. I swear, watch the movie again.
I'm also gonna blame it on the little sister from Growing Pains. She was a little squeaky but her spiral perm game was on point. I waited until 4th grade, but it wasn't anywhere near as curly. Sadness ensued and then...
Layers happened!
Nothing makes you look sophisticated quite like chunky highlights and a head full of layers.
But my hair had just been permed and cut and was too short. I think I just got another bowl cut to even the score.
By middle school I was watching VH1 Classics a lot.
I really wanted to look like pixie cut 80's Madonna but being only 12, I just looked 12, like a 12 year old boy!
My hair was growing out whilst everyone was attempting to do this!
And then Amelie came out and I bought some black hair dye. I was gonna be the hipest freshman ever!
We had a pool in our backyard at the time and the chlorine turned it a rusty green.
I looked super clownin.
As I tried to grow my hair out the rest of high school I missed out on these trends.
The Olsen Twin!
half straight half curled/day after prom look.
The Avril.
(This was impossible to achieve)
The Myspace!
My town wasn't hip enough to get the type of hair product needed to create this.
By college I think I decide that I have curly hair and theres nothing wrong with that. For three years I really didn't touch it.
And then I saw Shannyn Sossamon in Wristcutters and I chopped it all off and went back to
square one.
My new idol is ...
Tank Girl!
Just kidding mom.
Kinda.
