All the Trappings!

Looking at these photo's (yes, even the bearded lady) makes me feel a bit ashamed about the lack of inventive facial hair these days. Sure the standard beard is popular on the post undergrad set. Daring hipsters may dabble in the handle bar mustache. Its the sarcasm and irony behind it that upsets me. Why play it off as a joke when you can instead stand behind your facial hair with conviction. Young men of America should try to be a little more creative. Try out the massive side burn look perhaps. Why not? It's just hair.

And I shall name my first born Lee Hazelwood

As I was flipping (scrolling?) around on the internet today, through my favorite fashion blogs, I got to thinking about Lee Hazelwood. A drunk, a cowboy, a song-writer best know for his collaborations with Nancy Sinatra, and a man with one of the coolest names ever. An old friend and I developed an obsession with him several years ago. Something about his persona envelops everything cool. He dressed horribly and wonderfully at the same time. His songs are sort of creepy in a way, and his voice is like Johnny Cash meets Barry White. If I had a time machine I would definitely go back to the late 60's and track him down. The music isn't 100% fantastic but certain tracks are amazing. "Some Velvet Morning" for example deserves a second listening. It makes you want to put on a white cashmere suit and snake skin boots and ride a horse through the desert.

Javalina Summer 2010
The collection I created for the shop was mostly inspired by materials I found around town. Read Brothers Fabric on King Street, for example, has tons on vintage silk and satin with a great faded look to it. I went to an antique mall in Mount Pleasant and found an old lace table cloth, perfect for summery tank tops. It's really exciting to use fabrics in an unconventional way, so I purchased some wood-grain upholstery fabric for mini-skirts and camouflage flannel for high waisted shorts. The garments I created are still for sale until the end of the fall. Check it out Monday-Friday, 11-5!
